Small bathroom with a glass-screen shower, white wall panels and slim vanity

Bath-to-shower swaps for Oxgangs houses and flats from the 1950s

Oxgangs was mostly farmland until building began around 1953 to 1954. The estates were largely public housing. Many of those council homes were later bought by their tenants under right to buy, so a lot of the houses and flats are now privately owned. If you bought yours, the bathroom may still be the one it was built with.

If your bathroom is small and square, with the bath along one wall, we measure it and check the condition of the walls. Then we show you which changes give you the most usable space. We also check whether the old bath is sitting on a floor that needs levelling before a shower tray goes in.

Bath out, shower in

Taking out the bath for a walk-in shower or a shower enclosure frees up floor space. A slim vanity can go in the gap, and a tall cabinet can take towels and spare toiletries.

Wall panels over tired tiles

Wet wall panels go on quickly and have few joints to clean. We check the wall behind before panelling and put any wall preparation it needs on your written quote.

Bathrooms in Oxgangs regeneration housing and flats

The area has changed. Three high-rise blocks at Firrhill Drive and Oxgangs Crescent were demolished in 2005 and 2006, and the site of one now has 60 flats and 31 houses. A regeneration programme for Oxgangs began in 2003, and one phase delivered 34 homes at Firrhill Park and Firrhill Drive.

In a newer flat, the bathroom may be small and neatly laid out already. Upgrades there are usually a better shower, new flooring or a more practical vanity. If you let a flat, we can plan the bathroom to be hard-wearing and easy to wipe down. Tell us about any shared-building access rules at the start, such as lift use or delivery times, and we will plan around them.

Hard-wearing finishes

Wet wall panels, a sealed shower tray and a simple vanity are easy to keep clean between lets or after a busy week. We list each finish on the quote so you know what you are getting.

Flats with shared walls

We check pipework and how access works in a shared building and tell you what we plan before starting.

Bathroom Fitting Questions in Oxgangs

Do you fit bathrooms in former council houses in Oxgangs?

Yes. We cover all of Edinburgh. Many Oxgangs homes began as council housing in the 1950s and are now privately owned, and we plan from the room you have.

Can I swap the bath for a shower in a small Oxgangs bathroom?

Usually. At the visit we check the floor, the waste and the wall behind the bath. The quote names the shower, the screen and what goes on the wall.

Are wet wall panels a good choice for my flat?

They suit many flats because they have few joints and wipe clean easily. We check the wall behind first and tell you if it needs preparing before panels go on.

Can you fit a bathroom in a rental flat in Oxgangs?

Yes. We can choose hard-wearing finishes and plan around your dates. Tell us when the flat is empty.
