What is a wet room?

A wet room is a shower room with a waterproof floor and no tray. The floor slopes gently to a drain.

A level, open floor

The shower area sits flush with the floor. No step, no tray to clean around.

Tanking under the finish

Tanking is the waterproof layer under your tiles, across the floor and wet walls. You never see it, and it matters most.

A drain that suits your floor

A linear drain runs along one edge. A square drain sits in the middle. The right one depends on the floor and the waste route.

What we do when we fit a wet room

Your written quote names the products and work for your room. A wet room job normally covers this.

  • Removing the old bath or shower, wall finishes and flooring
  • Checking the floor and strengthening it where it needs it
  • Forming the slope so water runs to the drain
  • Fitting the drain and waterproofing the floor and wet walls
  • Tiling or panelling the walls, with sealed corners and joints
  • Fitting the shower, screen, basin and toilet, with pipework, electrics and ventilation as the layout needs

Wet room prices in Edinburgh

Our packages start from £4,699 for design, supply and fitting. A true wet room usually sits in Mid-range, from £6,499, because the floor has to be formed and waterproofed.

Wet room or walk-in shower?

A walk-in shower usually has a low tray and a glass screen. A tray is quicker to fit. A wet room has no tray, so the floor is flat and the space more open.

If you only want an easier shower, a tray may be enough. If you want a step-free floor, look at a wet room. Our walk-in showers and wet rooms page covers both. You can also read wet room or standard shower.

Wet rooms in flats and tenements

Most Edinburgh flats have timber floors with little depth to hide a drain. At the home visit we check the joist direction and the waste route. That tells us whether a level floor will work or a small raised section suits better.

Waterproofing matters more in a flat, because a leak reaches the neighbours below. Read about tenement bathrooms and water leak insurance in tenements.

Step-free showers for easier access

A wet room can make washing easier if steps are hard work. We can add a fold-down seat, grab rails and a handheld shower. See our page on accessible bathrooms. Just swapping a bath for a shower? See bath to shower conversions.

Have Your Floor Checked Before You Commit

We check the floor, joists and drainage at the visit. Then we show you wet room finishes and send a written quote.

  1. We come out to your home, so we see the room as it really is.
  2. We measure up and check the walls, floor, pipework and waste route.
  3. We show you examples of suites, tiles and panels in your own light.
  4. You get a written quote listing the products and the fitting work.

Why a wet room needs a visit

  • We see the real floor, not a guess
  • We check where the waste pipe can run
  • We tell you straight if a level floor will not work

FAQs

How much does it cost to install a wet room?

A true wet room usually sits in our Mid-range package, from £6,499. A larger or more finished room can move towards Premium, from £8,999. Both are starting prices for design, supply and fitting. After the home visit you get a written quote.

Can you fit a wet room in an upstairs flat?

Often, yes, but it depends on the floor. The timber joists have to take the slope and the drain has to have a route out. We check this at the home visit and tell you plainly if it will not work.

Is a wet room better than a standard bathroom?

It depends on your household. A wet room suits people who prefer showers and want a flat, open floor. If you need a bath, a standard bathroom or a separate shower room may suit better.

What stops a wet room leaking?

The waterproofing under the finish does the job. It has to cover the whole floor and run up the wet walls. Tiles and grout are not waterproof on their own.

Do I need a building warrant for a wet room?

Replacing a shower in the same position does not normally need one. New drainage or structural changes can. We tell you if a warrant is likely. Our building warrants guide explains more.
